173 Healthcare: Mercury

Mercury may be fatal if inhaled and harmful if absorbed through the skin. It is especially harmful to healthcare workers during the repair of broken thermometers and sphygmomanometers. 

This course takes a closer look at how healthcare workers can protect themselves from potential health hazards from mercury, as well as how to clean up a spill after a mercury thermometer breaks.

174 Healthcare: Fire Safety

Employers should train workers about fire hazards in a hospital setting and about what to do in a fire emergency. If employers would like workers to evacuate, then training should be provided on how to escape. If employers expect workers to use firefighting equipment, employers should provide them with appropriate equipment and training on how to use the equipment safely.

This course takes a closer look at protecting both patients and hospital staff from potential fire hazards in the healthcare setting.

175: Healthcare: Biological Hazards

Healthcare workers are exposed to a variety of infectious diseases during the performance of their duties.  Several biological hazards can pose a significant risk to healthcare workers if they are not properly controlled.

This course takes a closer look three of the most common biological hazards healthcare workers are exposed to, including legionnaires’ disease, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and tuberculosis.
